Every Day in June #12 (EDM #146) - Draw a favorite food

Pen and ink with watercolour stylized banana rendered by ©Ana Tirolese
Every Day in June #12 (EDM #146) - Draw a favorite food

Pen and Ink with Watercolour

Truth be known, I actually have many favourite foods, including bananas. I chose a banana because I could draw it without having to get up and getting a real one as a reference.

I like bananas dipped in chocolate (frozen or not) but don't do that very often.  When I was little, my mother would give me banana dipped in white sugar. My friend, Murilo, was telling me he enjoyed a banana microwaved and mashed with cinnamon. I tried it recently and it is good.  My favourite is frozen bananas that I enjoy during the summer during the summer. Sometimes I will blend a frozen banana in a blender until it is the consistency of ice cream. Yum!

Warning: Be careful biting into a frozen banana. It can break your teeth.

Dexter is a funny bird and we really enjoy having him living with us. He loves to spend time with Anthony. He also "helps" Anthony read books, sometimes he is a little too helpful.

Every Day in June #10 (EDM #126) - Draw a Sponge
Pen and Ink with Watercolour

I thought I would have a little fun with this challenge and draw Spongebob Squarepants. My son used to love this show when he was younger. Oh, who am I kidding, he still loves this show! When he is home he subjects me to hours of it on Netflix.

This was most fun to draw, even if I can hear Spongebob's maniacal laugh in my head every time I look at it.

Every Day in June # 9 - Draw Something Green

Pen and Ink with Watercolour Green Lantern rendered by ©Ana Tirolese
Every Day in June #9 (Every Day Matters #116) - Draw Something Green
The Green Lantern

Pen and Ink with Watercolour

I thought I would share my version of The Green Lantern. I am no Alex Ross or James Wood, but I had fun drawing this. I did it as part of a drawing every day challenge in one of my online art groups. Instead of drawing a leaf or a frog I thought I would do something a little different. I really do not do cartoons or comic book characters so this was a stretch for me.

I did enjoy the movie, The Green Lantern.

My Sketchbook is Viewed at the Sketchbook Project 2012 World Tour

Sharon surprised me by posting the above photo on my Facebook page. She went to the Sketchbook Project 2012 World Tour exhibit in her city. She wrote that she enjoyed viewing my sketchbook (and other sketchbooks) in person.

I am thrilled that someone who I know from my online art groups was able to view my sketchbook in a city so far away from my home. This is quite exciting for me.  I look forward to going to Toronto in July to see the Sketchbook Project 2012 World Tour for myself.

Every Day in June #8 - Draw Something Tart or Sour

Pen & ink with watercolour sour candy rendered by ©Ana Tirolese
Every Day in June #8 (EDM #106) - Draw something tart or sour

Pen and Ink with Watercolour

These are supposed to be sour candies. They come in packets or from gumball dispensers at the mall. They are small pellets and give you quite a jolt when you put them in your mouth. I rather like them.

I used my son's refillable brush pen to paint in the background. I liked it! Must get me one of those!

Every Day in June #7 - A Fire Hydrant

Pen & ink with watercolour fire hydrant rendered by ©Ana Tirolese
Draw a fire hydrant and write about firemen

Pen and Ink with Watercolour

This an older version of a fire hydrant. The newer ones are more sleek looking, but don't have nearly the personality these older ones have.

Firefighters (historically firemen) are rescuers extensively trained primarily to extinguish hazardous fires that threaten civilian populations and property, and to rescue people from dangerous incidents, such as collapsed and burning buildings. ~ Wikipedia

Below is the pencil under-drawing I did to get the shape before adding the ink. Sometimes I do pencil under-drawings when I need to work the shapes first. I thought it might be fun to show it since most people don't usually see this step.

642 Things to Draw #17 - A Full House

Pen and ink full house rendered by ©Ana Tirolese

Pen and Ink

When I posted this on the Facebook Group, my friend, Murilo Romeiro, asked why I did not do the best possible full house hand. The truth is, I know nothing about poker, or any other card games. I really don't play nor have the desire to play cards.

When I asked Google what a full house was, it responded two of a kind plus three of a kind. So, I borrowed my son's deck of cards (that he uses for magic) and grabbed the first cards that came my way, which happened to be the above hand.

Alternatively, I considered drawing:

  • a cartoon house with limbs and heads poking out of the windows and doors
  • a full theatre
  • the logo and cast of the television show Full House
In the end, this simple poker hand won out.

Every time I hear or see the word "shrubbery" I always think of Monty Python and the Knights that Say Ni.

I find this amusing.

642 Things to Draw #14 - Mushrooms

Pen and ink mushrooms rendered by ©Ana Tirolese

Pen and Ink

There are so many different kinds of mushrooms in the world.

I enjoy a good sautéed mushroom, however, I would never go pick them myself, in the wild. I don't know enough about mushrooms and would likely pick the poisonous kind.

There is such a huge variety of shapes and colours that I find mushrooms interesting to look at, and photograph. I discovered they are fun to draw as well.

642 Things to Draw #12 - Luminescent Plankton

Luminescent plankton rendered in pen and ink with coloured pencil by Ana Tirolese
luminescent plankton

Pen and Ink with Coloured Pencil

When I saw this challenge I had no idea what to do, then I remembered my son's favourite cartoon from when he was a child: Spongebob Squarepants!

There is a character named Sheldon J (Peter) Plankton on the show. This is the above illustrated character. I made him luminescent. This was a fun one to do.

642 Things to Draw #11 - A Fire Escape

Pen and ink fire escape rendered by ©Ana Tirolese
a fire escape

Pen and Ink

I don't remember ever seeing a real fire escape, but I must have at some point in my past. I was trying to remember what they looked like on those old TV shows. Anthony says that I drew it wrong; that they are usually zig-zag in shape. He may be correct. However, I think this could work too.

642 Things to Draw #10 - A Bottle Opener

Pen and ink with watercolour bottle opener rendered by ©Ana Tirolese
a bottle opener
Pen and Ink with Ink Wash

This is the kind of bottle opener I use the most. We don't have wine often so I keep the cork screw kind in a special, rarely opened, drawer. I use the sharp end on cans such as evaporated milk or coconut milk cans.

I discovered that the paper in this book does not take well to wet media. It soaks it up and leaves a grainy substance behind. It also bleeds through to the other side. I will not be doing any more washes or use watercolour in this book.

642 Things to Draw #9 - An Ottoman

An ottoman rendered in pen and ink by ©Ana Tirolese
an ottoman
Pen and Ink

I considered drawing someone from the Ottoman Empire, but I was too tired to do any research. So, this is an ottoman that I came up with out of my head.

I wish I had one to put my feet on while I draw. Right now I can recline on the sofa if no one needs to sit down at the other end. We really don't have the space for an ottoman, unless we re-think the whole living room area.

642 Things to Draw #8 - A String Quartet

Pen and Ink String Quartet rendered by ©Ana Tirolese in the style of The Muppets.
a string quartet
Pen and Ink

I attempted this challenge several times (in pencil), erasing each one. Then it hit me that I was being too stuffy and serious. So, I decided to do it in the style of The Muppets. This was far more fun to do.

My son had his own string quartet when he was 10 years old.  I was hoping to find photos of that to share with you, but I could not find the box with the photo albums in them. Some day I'll have to find those photo albums and digitize them all.

This full page drawing is when I decided to try to do most of the drawings in this book in pen and ink so that I can practice techniques and improve my abilities.

This is a BLT (bacon. lettuce, tomato) sandwich; one of my favourites.

Okay, so I drew the ear he did not cut off, and I really used Alexander's ear as my model. Van Gogh would have been fortunate to have such a beautifully shaped ear!

642 Things to Draw #5 - A Desk Chair

Pen and Ink chair rendered by ©Ana Tirolese
a desk chair

Pen and Ink

This is the last of the drawings I did on the first day of owning this book, and the last I did strictly from memory. It was getting late and I needed to get my beauty sleep.

I am pretty certain you can tell that this is a desk chair. I added lots of wheels so that it would roll around easier and make the chair more stable.

642 Things to Draw #4 - A Skunk

Pen and Ink skunk rendered by ©Ana Tirolese
a skunk

Pen and Ink

I have seen skunks in real life, but not up close. This is a combination of my memory of real skunks and Pepe Le Pew.  Pepe was one of my favourite cartoons as a child. Heck, I still get a kick out of him and his "...ack-ack of love..."

I did try to make it look more like a real skunk than a cartoon skunk, however, I am not proficient enough with pen and ink yet for super realistic renderings.

As I write this post I am being treated to Parfum a là Skunk wafting up through the patio doors in my living room. It would make Pepe Le Pew proud. "Un smelle vous finay"

642 Things to Draw #3 - An Anchor

Pen and Ink anchor by ©Ana Tirolese
an anchor

Pen and Ink

I'll be honest, I have never seen an actual anchor in real life. This is made up of what I think anchor tattoos look like, Popeye the Sailor Man's in particular.  I am 50 years-old now and have not watched a Popeye cartoon in years, so again, this is being pulled from the recesses of my memory.

I think it looks enough like an anchor to be called one.

Dexter

Dexter the Conure

This is a quick ink sketch of Dexter, our green cheeked conure / parakeet.

Dexter is a great boy. He is funny, sweet, and a food monger! You would think that I don't feed him with how he keeps trying to steal Anthony's food.

Below is a case in point. Dexter is sneaking a piece of pineapple out of Anthony's plate.

642 Things to Draw #2 - A Hammock

a hammock

Pen and Ink with Coloured Pencil

I drew this from memory. Well, it is from memory of seeing hammocks on television and in movies. I have never been in an actual hammock. Unfortunately, I am too uncoordinated to actually get into a hammock.

Lounging on a hammock is an activity has always eluded me. Over the years I have tried several times to climb into a hammock only to land on my backside on the ground. I cannot climb onto inflated mattresses on water, either.
